Disease, Parasite & OE Biosecurity Guide

Ethical butterfly husbandry requires proactive pathogen detection. Recognize early warning signs of protozoans, parasitoids, viruses, and nursery pesticide contamination.

Classification: ProtozoanRisk: Critical

Ophryocystis elektroscirrha (OE)

Common Host Targets: Monarch & Queen Butterflies

Observable Symptoms & Field Pathology

•Dark spots or uneven pigmentation on pupae
•Butterflies fail to eclose or fall while drying
•Crinkled, unexpanded wings
•Microscopic brown/black oval spores visible on abdomen scales under 40x magnification

Proactive Hygiene & Prevention

  • ✓Caterpillars are not crowded into a single cage, because OE spores pass between larvae held close together
  • ✓Mesh cages, floral tubes and surfaces are sanitised with a 10% bleach solution between broods, which penetrates the OE spore shells left on them
  • ✓Perform non-destructive clear scotch-tape test on adult abdomens before release
  • ✓Non-native Tropical Milkweed (Asclepias curassavica) is cut back in winter, which breaks the pathogen cycle
Immediate Action & Treatment Protocol:

There is no cure once infected. Heavily infected adults are humanely euthanised in a freezer, which keeps the spores out of wild populations.

Recommended Diagnostic Tool:Use a pocket 60×–120× LED field microscope for safe non-destructive tape testing of monarch abdomen scales.

Captive Breeding & OE Spore Amplification Risk

Commercial rearing kits and crowded enclosures drive OE infection rates far above what the same species carries in the wild. Check how your rearing setup compares.
